That's a very appealing idea to be in charge of your own business, but it requires a few character traits that must be present if you want to be a success. While small business isn't for everyone, individuals who possess the following traits will probably do well.
Persistence
Being in business isn't all sunshine and roses, and you will need persistence to get through the peaks and valleys. Persistence, like a muscle, can be built and expanded. I recommend that you begin working on "bulking up" your persistence muscle to make sure that while you are running the business it will be easier to survive the inevitable rough times.
Number Knowledge
Numbers are to business as water is to a beach. You simply can't have one without the other. If you aren't good with numbers you will need to work on that. It doesn't mean becoming a financial wiz, there are people you can hire for that, but you do have to know how to make money, how to hold on to money, determine if you are profitable and the like. Even if you have a bookkeeper or accountant you still need to know what the numbers are and what they mean to your business.
Adaptability
If you find anything constant about running a business, it is that things always change. That can cause plenty of stress for individuals that value stability and comfort. You will have to remain focused on your goal to stay on purpose as you fine-tune the way you do business and react to fluctuating market conditions.
Risk Assessment
It certainly is a gamble to start your own small business, however, you can make more educated choices than you currently make. If you become good at gauging the risks of the decision before you, you will be more intelligent in running your company.
Continual Learning
There are some that believe the time you stop learning is the day you stop living. The day you stop learning in the business world is the day you are have crippled your company. Keep a positive and open mind. There's always a better, more effective or efficient way to handle or do things. You need to be open to these different ways to advance your business.
Embracing Responsibility
As the owner of a company, you are in a very responsible position: if something goes wrong, you are responsible. There isn't anyone who is going to take care of it or fix it for you, so you have to be used to the idea that it is all your job. This would mean making hard decisions, owning up to and fixing mistakes, and following through to get things done.
Marketing Acumen
You can have the best product or service in the world, but if people don't realize it, you might as well not even keep the doors open. You must know the best way to grow your business by identifying and communicating with your market - the individuals who might have a need for what you offer. Make sure you put some time into coming up with a marketing plan that will have a strategy for the most effective approaches to promote your business.
These are merely a few of the characteristics a business owner will need. Don't get worried if you come up short in an area or two - all are things that you can build up and improve. Best of luck!
